photography

  • Decisive moment- the decisive moment is a concept made popular by the street photography, photojournalist, and Magnum con-funder Henri Cartier-Bresson. The decisive moment refers to capturing an event that is ephemeral and spontaneous, where the image represents the essence of the event itself.
  • Juxtaposition is a conceptual contrast that we often shoot without noticing it, particularly when shooting street photography.

  • Street photography- also sometimes called candid photography, is photography conducted for art or enquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places.

Today we went into the studio to take some pictures with a DLSR camera

What is shutter speed and what does it control?

  • Shutter speed is where it responsible for for creating dramatic effect by either freezing action or blurring motion. Shutter speed is on of the three pillars of photography the other two being ISO and Aperture.
  • Shutter speed is one of several methods used to control the amount of light recorded by the camera's digital sensor or film. It is also used to manipulate the visual effects of the final image, also image taken with a lower shutter invoke a visual sense of moment within 3 seconds.
What is shutter speed measured in?
  • Shutter speed is measured in fractions of a second, for example 1/4 means a quarter of a second and 1/250 means one two-hundred and fiftieth of a second or four milliseconds.
How do you change it on a DSLR?
  • First set your camera to Aperture Priority mode.
  • Then look into the view finder and point at a really dark area.
  • Lastly, switch to a very bright area and see what number changes.
  • The number that changes is your shutter speed.
Hoe fit you set up and create your painting with light shot?
  • make the room as dark as possible, have a black background, making sure the camera is on a low shutter speed and on a counter, turn on a torch and make a movement within the seconds that is set and wait for the final piece it should look like the design that you have made.
How did altering your shutter speed enable you to do this type of shot?
  • Because the altering the shutter speed allows me to create a design with in the seconds that is set and also the lower the shutter speed the better it might be.

What are the problems associated with long shutter speeds and how can you avoid them?
  • That is could make the image blurry.
  • The image is frozen.
  • Over exposed.
  • Make half of the image black.

Yesterday i decided to go to Gunwharf to take photos of random things.

MY PHOTOGRPAHY.

Photography research

Ansell Adams:
·       Ansel Adams was an American photographer best known for his iconic images of the American West, including Yosemite National Park. Ansel Adams was born on February 20, 1902, in San Francisco, California. Adams rose to prominence as a photographer of the American West, particularly Yosemite National Park, using his work to promote conservation of wilderness areas. His iconic black-and-white images helped to establish photography among the fine arts. He died in Monterey, California, on April 22, 1984. (http://www.biography.com/people/ansel-adams-9175697#early-life)
Most of his photos are black and white which are landscaped this might suggests that he loved to explore new places and take incredible images

quote

I choose this picture as it as having it black and white makes it more effective to look at also 1the image mainly focuses on the snow and the wind blowing the snow. It also captures the mountain covered within the snow and the little tress below the landscape
Kevin Carter

·       Kevin Carter was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Carter grew up in a middle-class, whites-only neighborhood. As a child, he occasionally saw police raids to arrest blacks who were illegally living in the area. He said later that he questioned how his parents, a Catholic, "liberal" family, could be what he described as 'lackadaisical' about fighting against apartheid. After high school, Carter dropped out of his studies to become a pharmacist and was drafted into the army. To escape from the infantry, he enlisted in the Air Force in which he served four years. In 1980, he witnessed a black mess-hall waiter being insulted.

·       Emotional detachment allowed Carter and other photojournalists to witness countless tragedies and continue the job. The world’s intense reactions to the vulture photo appeared to be punishment for this necessary trait. Later, it became painfully clear that he hadn’t been detached at all. He had been deeply, fatally affected by the horrors he had witnessed.

·       The use of photography he uses is emotion such as taking horrific images that are sad and shocking also making it more effective to view

·      I choose this image as Kevin expresses his photography by taking pictures of sad things, by looking at this image it makes me question what has happened and worried about the child, is he even safe with that person? And why are they the only people?
Annie Leibovitz

·

Annie Leibovitz, considered one of America's best portrait photographers, developed her trademark use of bold colors and poses while at 'Rolling Stone.'  In 1983 she began working for the entertainment magazine Vanity Fair, continuing to produce images that would be deemed iconic and provocative. Having also worked on high-profile advertising campaigns, Leibovitz's images have been showcased in several books and major exhibitions around the world.

·       Annie uses her photography to capture beauitful images of women and get every feature that’s possible

i chose this image of the girl as it captures her beauty and the powerful effect it has on her light blue eyes, she might have created a wind effect for the hair to blow which it works well within this image.

Dave Bailey
  • ·         Professional career. In 1959, Bailey became a photographic assistant at the John French studio, and in May 1960, he was a photographer for John Cole's Studio Five, before being contracted as a fashion photographer for British Vogue magazine later that year. He also undertook a large amount of freelance work.
  • ·       "Sometimes a small gift or thoughtful gesture can shape a person's entire life. It was just such a moment that led David to the pursuit of his dream. As with most siblings, David wanted to emulate his brother. He longed to follow in his brother's artistic footsteps but in his own creative direction. Sensing this untapped talent, his brother gave him his first camera, a 35mm Voigtlander and from there an inspiration grew."
quoted by David Bailey

I picked this image as its very interesting to me because of the way the model is posing its like its really serious, the photographer uses black and white which it makes it more effective and he uses this effect throughout the images that he produces.

The difference between connotation v denotation is that when you list what is in a image its is denotation the literal content of an image, you think about what representation and meaning or feelings you are considering the connotation.

This image has a deep meaning to it because on the little girl showing emotions but different people might think of something else to describe what might be happening. The contexts of this image is that she might not have a good life, this image was taken by a journalist photograph Daniel Allen it was taken in Nepal which has a-lot of poverty.

This picture was taken it the 18th century, the difference between this photography is that its not in colour and the clothing that they are wear is old fashion and big clothing items.

by Fred Matos, this image is with a homeless women with a little child, the story behind this is that they might be poor and couldn't afford the to keep a home to live in. The location of this image is Brussels.

Why is leading lines important?

  •  Leading lines are important so it can make it more effective is when lines start in the bottom left side of the image, Also when using lines that leads the viewers eyes into the image. The main subject will stop and hold the eye.

How are your images uses leading lines?

  •  The image of the flower has leading lines in the centre of the flower leading into the middle, as it goes in towards the flower if fades away.
  • The image of the leave has loads of lines in the centre of it and also makes it more effective for the eye.
  • The image of Robyn is lines on the walls and her fingers are leading lines also her face has leading lines.
  • The image of the fence has straight lines going down and also across where it is against the wall.
I chose this example because the leading lines of the image made it more effective and the fact that its black and white makes it look better.

The leading lines of this image is the stairs and the tunnel it makes it more effective and stands out more when you are viewing the image.

This image has leading lines to connected with the bridge, also its faded in with the sky in the centre of the image.

Repetition and pattern

This is repetition and pattern, by placing the camera on the table and going the direction of the pattern it makes it more effective in the image.

In photography composition symmetrical can be effectively used to create a sense of harmony, balance and proportion. it soothes the eyes and mind of the viewer.

Repetition photography is a way to grab the attention of your audience and draw them into the image. Repeating a shape throughout your photo gives you instant composition.

Focus point is the point at which rays or waves meet after reflection or refraction, or the point from which diverting rays or waves appear to proceed.

focal point is where the camera focuses on on particular part of the images for example the flowers are in the centre on the rule of third to make the background more blurred.

Rule of third is appealing a subject with the guide line and their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section

With my images the rule of thirds have made it more effective to see for example the picture of me walking is effected because the cars in the background are burred and the focus point is me.

I like this image because it is very effective, the snow on the tress is a very bright contrast to the image, this picture is horizon along the centre of the frame, but this can give the photo a "split in two" feeling.
I choose this picture as the rules of third is applied by focusing on the person on the horse.

My example for rules of thirds on holiday in cornwall :

colour light

this photo has a cold tone as the effect is dark.
this image has a warm effect because it has a brighter shine to the picture

white balance settings- it removes unrealistic colour casts, so the objects which appear white in person are rendered white in your photo. White balance has to take into account the "colour" temperature of a light source, which refers to the relative warmth or clones of white light.

The colour connotations is a circle with several different colours sectors used to show the relationship between colour. It changes the effect of the picture and shows the mood of the image.

green- sick
red- fire and blood
orange- happniess
yellow- joy and cheerfulness
blue- trust and wisdom
dark green- greed and jealousy

what is colour harmony?

Colour harmony is a analogous colour schemes use colours that are next to each other on the wheel. They are usually match well and create serene and comfortable designs.

Our interpretation of a color can be changed when certain colors are juxtaposed.
A bright color will make the color that lies next to it appear more like its complementary color.
The effect of juxtaposing contrasting colors creates movement and vitality.

Picture – Primary and Secondary background colors juxtaposed with a gray feature. The colors seem true without altering their appearance

A colour is visible light with a specific wavelength. Black and white are not colours because they do not have a specific wavelength. Instead white light contains all wavelength of visible light. Black on the other hand is the absence of visible light.

 Soft and Hard light

Soft light-  the light has low contrast and low colour saturation
Hard light- the light gives out high contrast with high colour saturation

In the pictures I used where soft and hard so went in the shade areas and took a picture of Robyn then one in the sun to see the difference and took a picture of a light which is in the sun.

  • - sun
  • - light bulb
  • - fireworks
  • - reaction

4 main properties:

  1.  quantity
  2.  quality
  3.   direction
  4. colour

The depth of field is a measure of how much 'depth' of an image will be focus.

What effects it?

  1. The aperture
  2. The focus length of lens used
  3. how near the subject focussed on is to the camera
  4. the aperture is measured in F numbers, the larger the F number the smaller the aperture is.

The task was to take shots that demonstrate depth of field- change the depth of the F number setting.
